What Is It About The MM300? Seiko SBDX001 Marinemaster 300
I don’t know what it is about this watch that has me coming back to it time after time after time! This is the fifth one I’ve owned and each time I’ve replaced it with something else I’ve inevitably missed it and eventually bought one again. Maybe I need to take the hint this time.. One of the whinges I sometimes read about the MM300 concerns the use of a Hardlex crystal instead of the sapphire that one might expect in a plus £2k watch. This particular watch has had the Hardlex swapped out for a bespoke AR-coated (underside) crystal and whilst that’s great, I personally have never had anything against Hardlex. Having owned four examples with the Hardlex I have to say I’ve never managed to scratch a single one of them and if you’re going to actually dive with the watch then Hardlex is less susceptible to shattering on impact than sapphire, which is why, I suspect, our friends at Seiko continue to use it, despite public outcry from the desk-divers. I’m just glad to have one back on my wrist, sapphire or no sapphire!!
