Omega 3551.20.00 Speedmaster “Broad Arrow Grail”
OK, the “Grail” bit is just tongue in cheek but this combo is very special in my opinion. This is the blue hand/baton Omega Speedmaster 3551.20.00 Broad Arrow, a watch I’ve always admired; all except the bracelet, that is.. I really don’t like modern Speedy bracelets and much prefer the look of the vintage bracelets. My favourite Speedy bracelet is the solid link and end link 1450 bracelet that came as standard on the 376.0822, a watch often referred to by collectors as the “Grail”. The only problem with the 1450 bracelet is that it’s a rare bird so hard to find and expensive once found. In my opinion, however, it’s worth the pain as it turns a very nice Speedy into something quite exquisite.
The 3551.20.00 Broad Arrow dial and hands combo is probably my favourite of all the Speedies. The blue hands and batons on the off-white dial are fantastic; the sub-dials sit just right and whilst many people don’t like date windows I’m not one of them as long as it’s done right. The 376.0822 was lovely but having both a date and day window they were certainly noticeable. On this one the subtle little date window goes almost un-noticed until you need to know the date and there it at six O’ Clock! Wonderful! So, if Chuck Maddox can do it why not me? I hereby christen this combination the “Broad Arrow Grail”. (I don’t use smileys on the blog but if I did there would be one or two right here..)
